Slide TCVM Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has been used to treat a variety of medical conditions for over 3000 years, and the American Veterinary Medical Association accepted it as a form medical treatment in 1998. TCM states that acupuncture works by adjusting the flow of vital energy, or Qi (pronounced “chee”), along specific pathways, or meridians, in the body. By inserting very fine needles into specific points on the body, this energy can be improved or altered, restoring balance and resolving the disease. In Western terms, acupuncture exerts its effects by stimulating the nervous and endocrine systems to release endorphins and other hormones that are part of the body’s natural defense against pain and inflammation.
